Story

me2-2Growing up I use to love playing with my “dollies,” baby dolls, Barbie dolls and especially paper dolls.  We would play dress up using doll blankets to style clothing for ourselves.  We spent hours designing and making clothes for both our Barbie dolls and our paper dolls.  No matter the occasion our dollies were dressed for the occasion and were always perfectly accessorized!  It was through this childhood play that I fell in love with everything “fashion” and eventually how dollie enterprises came into existence.  In essence, dollie is every woman’s ultra-ego.  When you look good you feel good.  My motto has always been “one must always look their best no matter the occasion.”

I always thought I wanted to be a fashion designer.  I wanted to study fashion in Paris.  However growing up in rural Wisconsin on a dairy farm with 7 siblings that was not in the cards!  Nor was New York or even Dallas!  I did go to Lowthian College, now The Art Institute of Minneapolis, and got a Diploma in Fashion Merchandising working in retail upon graduation.  Retail was not paying the bills though.  I began working in the corporate world.  Upon moving to Houston, TX I went to college getting a BBA in accounting and my Certified Public Accounting license.  I continued to work in the accounting/business world for over 10 years.  In the back of my mind I “thought” I still wanted to be a fashion designer.  I quit the corporate world and became a full-time Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc. Sales Director and began taking Fashion Design classes through the Academy of Art University.

I love to shop!  I have a knack for finding unique items and an eye for taking a few basic clothing pieces adding some accessories and make a fabulous outfit.  I began reselling clothing, accessories and jewelry to my Mary Kay customers, through eBay, and at in home parties.  I also started representing a couple lines of jewelry.  This led me to take some metalsmithing classes at the Academy of Art University.  I fell in love and discovered my true passion, designing and making jewelry.  Thus MAE artisan jewelry was born!

My journey hasn’t always been easy.  I am still not exactly sure what I want to do when I grow up!  Presently, I continue to enjoy shopping and reselling my finds. I am concentrating on continuing to develop, design and craft MAE jewelry.  I am beginning to sell more of my work and less of others work.  I am also discovering other art forms including, writing, drawing, photography, knitting, sewing and even bartending.  OK, bartending is not really an “art” but I love it!

I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge my husband Ken, he is my biggest fan, my best friend and greatest supporter.  He is my rock.  He is also my tech guy and helps me out immensely in my business.  We live in beautiful Hillsborough, NC with our 3 kitties, Porche, Louis Vuitton and Oscar de la Renta, who also give me much inspiration and companionship.
